30 Minute Icebreaker Game for a Large Group

This is a topic I’m quite passionate about.

A networking icebreaker activity that is low-lift and gets people energized, up and moving around, and breaking through the awkwardness that groups often have during their first meeting.

This is especially important when you have a mix of new people and returning people in the group, so I'm hoping this will get them to mix together well.

The icebreaker idea I’ll share will get people:

When you have a large group, the last thing on your mind is adding another logistical challenge or cost that would blow your budget.

I’ve had the opportunity to be part of many large events (conferences, summits) and have been on both the attendee end and the facilitator end.

I’m going to share what both sides are like.

As an attendee, I’ve found myself sneaking back to my room and avoiding the banquet hall because of fear of sitting at the wrong table, sitting alone, and the awkward feeling of networking.

I can say without hesitation that it can be difficult. The irony is, the more people there are in the room, the harder it is to network or have meaningful conversations.

What I found at these larger events was that approaching people was tough, “What would I say?”, and the dreadful circle of acquaintances. People who kind of knew each other would stick together, making it really hard to break in and get to know others.

What made it tough was knowing that I was the only one who seemed to have felt this way. Well, that was not the case, actually, I wasn’t the only one.

I started to notice folks sneaking back up on the elevator to overcome the chaos. Funny enough, networking in the elevator was the real strategy. Because we all shared the same experience and nerves, it made it easier to relate and connect, and being in a box for 30 seconds was quite the opportunity for an elevator pitch.

I’ve also had the pleasure of attending similar events where there were built-in icebreakers and activities. This significantly made a difference. I wasn’t worried about whether I would meet someone; I simply had to participate, and I was almost guaranteed to meet and connect.

One of my favorite networking activities of all time was Jam Bingo. When I say it made networking easier, I really mean it.
