What Makes a Good Icebreaker Question?

A good icebreaker question is easy to answer, but leads somewhere interesting. 'Where are you from?' ends in one word. 'Ask someone what they'd show a visitor in their hometown' starts a story. The questions in this generator come from real Jam Bingo templates used at company events, nonprofits, clubs, conferences, and parties, so they're written to get two people talking — not to put someone on the spot in front of a group.

Tips

Tips for Getting It Right

Ask for stories, not facts

'What's the best trip you've taken?' beats 'Do you like to travel?' — open questions keep the conversation going.

Keep them inclusive

Skip questions about money, looks, relationships, or anything someone could feel left out of.

Match the room

Lighter questions for parties and first meetings, deeper ones for retreats and teams that already know each other a little.

Pair questions with movement

Questions work best when they send people to someone new. 'Find someone who… and ask them…' does both at once.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What are good icebreaker questions for a group?

Open questions that are easy to answer and lead to a story: 'What's something you're looking forward to this month?', 'What's the best advice you've ever received?', or 'What would you show a visitor in your hometown?' Avoid yes/no questions and anything too personal.

How many icebreaker questions do I need?

Plan about 3–5 minutes per conversation. For a 30-minute activity, 8–12 questions is plenty. If each person gets their own questions (like in Jam Bingo), write two to three times as many as the number of conversations so they don't all get the same ones.

Where do these icebreaker questions come from?

They come from Jam Bingo templates written for real events — company kickoffs, volunteer nights, club mixers, conferences, holiday parties, and more.

Is the icebreaker question generator free?

Yes. It's free to use, with no sign-up. Copy as many questions as you like.

How do I use icebreaker questions with a large group?

Don't go around the room — it takes too long and puts people on the spot. Instead, have everyone pair up and discuss a question, then switch partners. Jam Bingo automates this: each person gets a question on their phone and meets someone new to answer it.
